The Electronic Spirit of Erik Satie (MP3s)

[ 39 MP3 files after the jump ]

What do you get when you combine Erik Satie with a bunch of stoned hippies, a chamber orchestra, and a Moog? It is hard to tell what would happen today, but in the 70s this resulted in the album “The Electronic Spirit of Erik Satie, featuring The Moog Synthesizer with The Camarata Contemporary Chamber Orchestra”, released in 1972 on Deram, a Decca subsidiary. Like Daniel Steven Crafts’ Soap Opera Suite/Snake Oil Symphony, this is an album I discovered at my old radio station WCBN, and long after I had left Ann Arbor I realized that I just could not live without it. Of course it is out of print, but thanks to eBay I now own a copy, so I don’t have to go back to Michigan to steal it.

Here are some excerpts from the liner notes, without comment:

Notes Relating to the Title: “The Electronic Spirit of Erik Satie” (Music Mystically Inspired)

Satie was convinced that he was a spirit working under the direct guidance of some medieval cleric whose fanatical piety he had inherited from beyond the grave.

This producer is convinced that he is also a spirit working under the direct guidance of Erik Satie, whose eccentricities and mysticisms have guided him throughout the making of this LP.

Further Proof:
A.) The arranger felt the actual presence of Satie in the room with him while he was scoring. (Erik’s spirit would hover around the room and, at times, reach over his shoulder and guide his pencil along the score page, shouting directions in his ear “B flat not B natural, you dummy!”) His worst moment was when he added bars to Satie’s barless music… (the arranger in this case cannot recall having scored any of the pieces in the LP.)
B.) The presence and guidance of Satie’s spirit was never more felt than in the programming and playing of the Moog synthesizer. All the wave forms, modulation mixes, oscillations and permutations have never been duplicated since, and the Moog player, who was entirely unfamiliar with the instrument at the time, has no recollection of having done the album whatsoever!!!!!!!

I mentioned stoned hippies, didn’t I? Anyway, let’s face the music after the jump.If you don’t want to download 39 MP3 files by hand, here are all of them in two convenient ZIP archives: Side I | Side II. But don’t listen without reading the annotations!

Penny Arcade Expo Early-Bird Registration Ends March 31, 2007

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

Seattle, Wash. – March 29, 2007 – Penny Arcade, creators of the popular online comic strip of the same name, today gave the final call for this year’s Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) early-bird registration. Early-bird registration for the August 24-26 game-culture celebration at the Washington State Trade and Covention Center in downtown Seattle, Wash., will end Saturday, March 31.

Early-bird registrants pay just $40 for a three-day pass. Those who register between April 1 and Aug. 1 will pay $45 for a three-day pass, and passes purchased at the door will be $30 per day. Online registration is available at www.pennyarcadeexpo.com.

PAX tickets are selling more than twice as fast as they did last year. PAX 2006 drew 20,000 gamers, prompting a move to the cavernous Washington State Trade and Convention Center in Seattle. The change in venue more than doubles the size of the PAX show floor, giving attendees more than 200,000 square feet packed with soon-to-be-released games, tournaments, concerts, contests and more.

PAX is unique in that it gives equal love to all games, whether they’re played on a television, computer monitor or tabletop. Highlights include a huge new exhibit floor, incredible nerdcore concerts and the amazing Omegathon three-day tournament. Only pre-registered attendees are eligible to become Omeganauts.

Musical guests at PAX 2007 include The OneUps, MC Frontalot, Jonathan Coulton, Freezepop, The Neskimos and Optimus Rhyme. Microsoft, Sony, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts/Mythic, Sabertooth Games, Telltale Games, the Behemoth, Namco-Bandai, Upper Deck, Wizkids, ArenaNet, Harmonix, and Rockstar top the list of over 50 companies exhibiting at PAX 2007.

Rumormonger: Top Chef-er Sam Talbot on Bowery?

Friday, March 14th, 2008

We interrupt breaking coverage of chef Daniel Boulud’s plan for Bowery domination with the news that Top Chef fan favorite Sam Talbot might also be eyeing a spot on the increasingly tony boulevard—a spot just a stone’s throw from Boulud’s joint across the street, in fact. A tipster emails, “saw a flyer for a community board meeting to evaluate a liquor license application for ‘Sam Talbot or corp’ at 312-314 The Bowery (btwn Bleecker and Houston).” Above, witness the exterior of 312-314 Bowery, one door down from Mannahatta. (It’s a recently gut-renovated apartment building that broker Massey Knakal’s offering for $23 million, all-in. Note that the listing indicates $487,375 retail income for the building.)

For Talbot, the move would come just under two months since he split from partners at forthcoming LES eatery Spitzer’s Corner. But in a shocking twist, moments ago, Talbot outright denied the news to Eater, saying, “It’s not my space. It’s a rumor. I have nothing to do with it.” Obfuscation or reality? We’re inclined to take Talbot at his word, but perhaps we’ll find out for sure tonight, when the community board meeting goes down. Reports from the scene assured.

Guelaguetza the Celebration of Lunes del Cerro

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Oaxaca Mexico - Guelaguetza or the celebration of Lunes del Cerro (Mondays on the Hill), which takes place during the month of July in the state of Oaxaca, is one of most magnificent examples of the diverse and colorful roots of Mexico’s popular culture.

The name Guelaguetza dates back to Zapotec times, meaning an offering or gift representing the highest civility. The Zapotecs had a very strong spiritual community and they helped one another in agricultural labors and daily activities. The Guelaguetza is one of the many examples of ritual gift exchanges.
Over 3,000 years ago, the indigenous residents of what today is known as the state of Oaxaca, dedicated themselves to cultivate various plants, among them was corn, the most distinguished and basic element of their diet.

When Mexicas conquered the territories belonging to Mixteco and Zapotec natives, they brought with them their own religious ceremonies. In July, they honored Centéotl; God of Corn, Xilonen was the Goddess of Tender Corn and Huitzilopochtli was God of War. These rituals would commence with a meal offered to all those present. On the tenth day of the month, after a ritual ceremony with songs and dances, a virgin dressed to represent the Goddess of Corn was sacrificed and her heart was offered to the divinity. Festivities would go on for nine days and Huitzilopochtli was honored towards the end of July with offerings and flowers.

After the conquest, Spaniards associated these festivities with the celebration of La Virgen del Carmen to aide in the conversion of the natives into Catholicism.

Ten Nic Cage Flicks I Wish I’d Never Seen

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Walking up to the ticket window this afternoon to demand my admission to Next, a film I had very little interest in, I was reminded of all those torturous Nicolas Cage films I’d seen over the past decade in particular.

Next was not screened for me, but I thought it looked like a big enough deal that I should make time for it on opening weekend; a review will be online hopefully by Saturday night. Why had it been so easy, why had it been my duty to see Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, probably among the ten worst big budget war movies of all time, and Next was off limits to me in an official capacity? Could it really be worse than The Wicker Man?

As I was reminded of Nic Cage’s misbegotten wealth - I put the estimate at over $100 million in checks he has cashed for absolute garbage - I thought I should come up with a sort of primer on the worst of the worst Nic Cage movies, at least the ones I’d seen. Maybe it can serve as a guide for you to know what to avoid.

1 - Windtalkers

You know how I estimated that Cap’n Corelli might be among the ten worst big budget war movies of all time? I have no such uncertainty about this film, the touching story of Navajo code talkers in World War II as told through the eyes of Nic Cage and an unremarkable nurse.

2 - 8mm

What do you get when you combine a post-Oscar, cash hungry Cage with Joel Schumacher? An absolute trainwreck.

3 - Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

I understand the book is quite the read. As if I’d pick it up now.

4 - The Wicker Man

How high on the unintentional comedy scale is Nic Cage punching out cult women while wearing a bear suit? The ending of this flick is the worst Labatt’s Beer commercial I’ve ever seen.

5 - Zandalee

Striking while the iron was red hot on the career of Judge Reinhold, Cage plays…a guy with a goatee, I think. Anyway, New Orleans has never seemed less interesting than it does here.

6 - City of Angels

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times: If a woman starts seeing the same creepy stranger in a black trenchcoat pop up wherever she goes, if the stranger looks and acts like Nic Cage and if she finds out that stranger lives in the library…she’s not going to fall in love with him.

7 - Snake Eyes

The same rules apply here that we used for 8mm, except the director this time is Brian DePalma, who is at least competent at ripping off better directors.

8 - Kiss of Death

It sure was for David Caruso, but let’s not forget the intensity Cage ratchets up here. As a depiction of roid rage it was even too far over the top.

9 - Guarding Tess

I’m sure you could make a pretty good movie with Cage and Shirley MacLaine. But this clearly isn’t it.

10- Ghost Rider

He’s too old for the part and too stuck on himself to take seriously. Trouble is, he’s one of the best things about the movie.

Technical news [Auto unproteced] - When protecting a page, it is now possible to specify an expiration date for the protection. So for example, with the new feature, you can semi-protect a page for 5 days, and after those 5 days the protection will be automatically lifted.  The box to fill in the expiring time is a simple text box, so you can use the same notations that are used when blocking a user. For example, all of the following should work fine: 10 min, 10 hours, 10 days, or a specific date and or time like 2007-01-25 22:45. For the last option, you may need to convert your local time to the local Wiki's time. To localize: MediaWiki:Protectexpiry. http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.science.linguistics.wikipedia.technical/29338/focus=29338 [protect all] - Sysops can now select the option "Cascading protection" when protecting a page. The result is that everything on that page is protected, including templates, templates used inside those templates, and images. The only thing that is not protected are images not hosted locally, but on the Wikimedia Commons.
To localize:  MediaWiki:Protect-cascade, MediaWiki:Protect-cascadeon, MediaWiki:Cascadeprotected, MediaWiki:Cascadeprotectedwarning http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2007-01-15/Cascading_protection [Special:Protectedpages] - There is a new special page, "Special:Protectedpages". This page, which is only periodically updated, shows all protected pages on your wiki. This page also indicates if the page is fullly protected or semi-protected. You can find it in the normal list of special pages. At the time of this writing, those lists are still empty. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Protectedpages [rel="nofollow"] - At Jimbo Wales' directive, all external links in the main (article) namespace of the English language Wikipedia are now coded "nofollow".  This should help cut spamming of EN Wikipedia. External links on this wiki will no longer help to boost the Google PageRank or perceived importance of those sites in other search engines. http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikien-l/2007-January/061137.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_in_blogs#rel.3D.22nofollow.22 http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/01/22/1840214 [perma link?] - Due to changes to the mailing list system and the archive, it is possible that a link to a specific posting in a list archive may be pointing to a different posting. So just like a page on the wiki, a link to a mailing list archive can change. This change does not effect the archive of gmane.org. If you wish to refer to a specific posting you should also include the Message-ID of the post. You can find that in the headers of every email and give a unique reference tag for that message. http://article.gmane.org/gmane.science.linguistics.wikipedia.technical/28993 [Wikidown] - Most non-English wikis recently went down for two and a half hours due to a full hard drive on the master database server. A few edits were lost, but the problem appears to be fixed now. http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.science.linguistics.wikipedia.technical/29243/focus=29243 Request for help [Sitenotice update] - Request from Erik Möller to all wikis: "the "Thank you" notice can be removed now from
all wikis. Where any donation messages have been in place before the fundraiser, they should be restored." To do this, update the following: MediaWiki:Sitenotice (registered users and anonymous if "anonnotice" is empty) MediaWiki:Anonnotice (anonymous users)
Some wikis are using the anonnotice to run a permanent discreet notice for anonymous users, like EN Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Anonnotice Foundation [New hire] - Anthere announced the addition of Sandra Ordonez as Communications Manager to the Wikimedia Foundation office staff. Because of a cache problem it appeared to be a lower number of articles.  Did you know … … that it is not always easy for others to understand your name on Wiki?

Most if not all human cultures use identifiers to distinguish the different members of their community. The most common identifier is the name of the person. There exists many incompatible naming systems. This can result in errors and miscommunication when converting foreign names names to your own naming system. It is important to be aware of the existence of those differences.

The most basic setup is the first name. Most people have also a family name. People can also have more than one "first name"; middle names. Also the family name can consist of several parts. How these are all used is what can be confusing.

Because it can be "first-name family-name" or "family-name first-name" it can be difficult to tell which is the first name and which is the family name. The best way to make this clear is write the family name in capital letters to indicate the difference.

Because names can appear strange for you, or unisexsual or it in some cultures it is custom to write only the first letter of your first name(s), so you can have a name like "J.H.Janssens", it can be that it is not clear what your sex is based on your name. To solve this problem, it is best to include a clue as to your sex in your username, or on your user page, so that people know how to address you.  Fund drive quotes

The Entire Late 60s in Eight Minutes

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Are there songs that distill the sixties down to a sonic nub? a nugget of pure, unadulterated zeitgiest that not even Hegel could unravel (assuming that Hegel owned a headshop and was freinds with Roky Erikson) ?

When posed this question, popular avantguardist Alex Keller had the answer at the ready.
Apparently In the heady days of the late 1980s' Alex and his wife , in the aftermath of a drug fueled bacchanale, had composed the ultimate in head music with the toe -tapping yet harrowing “Dirty, Naked, And High”.

This mythic opus went on to win the Institute Of Sarcastic Sociologys' “That's Fucking Perfect” award.

If we were less conceptual and more ambitious, Neil Martinson and I would have certainly followed through with the 6 disc concept album “Drugs are Cool-And I Love You” .

We were not, to say the least.

As I recall, the titular song had driving horn charts and an anthemic chorus.
Ok, so it was a less than radical blend of “Cant Judge A Book By It's Cover” and “I Can't get Next To You”, but dammnit, it would have meant something to a generation of unwashed and somewhat slightly dazed.

Unbeknownst to either group of hot rockin' Social Historians, the 60s' had already been summed up by authentic practitioners of same.

Sexual Fantasy #8 by willfully obscure 60's mokes “Fate” had firmly closed the coffin lid on all that needed to be said.

What little info I could find says that this record barely made it to a test pressing in 1968 , only to moulder until Shadoks Music out of Germany picked up what they were layin'down. It's also available on the fabulous Shadoks Music Comp [7.99 from Amazon] along with loads of other patchouli scented obscurities from the planet Buzz Click Whirr Twang.
